Our History

The club that became NRG began in 1993 with posting on the bulletin board of what is now Fitness First St Leonards, to form a group to train for Six Foot Track Marathon. Susan Griffith and Gary Swain were the co-founders, and the group grew over the years. A Monday Intervals session was added to the Saturday long run. When Gary died in a motorbike crash in January 2000, Susan sought to merge the group with Athletics East.

In April 2002 she recruited a committee to form our group as a separate club. A competition was run to adopt a name. Randy Brophy's club name was voted in, and Northside Running Group (NRG) became an incorporated club.

After 2016, the club focused less on Six Foot Track as the race became more difficult to enter, and other more accessible race events were promoted. Logos and website designs changed a few times, more run sessions and the Education Night were added.

A difficult time began with the 2019 bush fires followed by COVID-19. Like many clubs, membership numbers declined in this period. However we used this time to update our programs and processes and we are now growing again.

NRG continues to welcome all levels of runners and helps to guide them in their fitness and racing goals, and have a lot of fun.
